Subnautica 2’s early access launch today is the ‘biggest’ in the series ‘with the most amount of content’ yet

The most-wishlisted game on Steam is finally launching into early access today, and according to devs, there's plenty already there to dive into.

Subnautica 2's early access release includes quite a bit of content, according to Unknown Worlds devs who spoke during a presentation about the game last week. They estimate that there's about 14 to 20 hours of content already at launch, with a roadmap planned to add more throughout the years.

"It's been very humbling to see the fan reaction and the amount of wishlists that we have," said creative producer Scott MacDonald of the game's five million wishlist achievement on Steam. "The reception has been incredible. We've had people join the studio specifically to work on this game who have been fans themselves. We as a team want to make sure we don't disappoint not only ourselves, but the fans out there, by making the best possible Subnautica 2 we can."

The latest deep-sea exploration/survival game launch drops the player onto a new world with a new story, new creatures, and more to explore, all built from scratch on a new engine that differs from the other earlier games in the series. And the devs at Unknown Worlds think there's more than enough content on day one in the $29.99 offering, with much more to come.

"I think our early access launch is our biggest that we've ever done, with the most amount of content," MacDonald said. "But at the end of the day, I think it's one of our best games we've ever launched into early access. I think it probably is the best."

Subnautica 2 launches today in EA with "over 10 biomes," five new Leviathan creatures, a new Tadpole submersible for players to explore with, and the beginning of its story. But future updates will add more to the experience over time, as you'd expect with an EA title.

The 1.1 update will focus on quality of life updates, while 1.2, later this year, will be centered on improving co-op play, which is totally optional. The team is at work on additions like proximity voice chat, emotes, a revive system, and other customizations. Future updates are planned to deal with massively expanding the world with new biomes, creatures, Leviathans, resources, tools, a vehicle, and more chapters in the story.

Subnautica 2 also includes a more fleshed-out base-building system that will surely bring about some incredible builds once players get their hands on it today, and I'm looking forward to seeing what can be created.
