Subnautica 2 Early Access cinematic trailer reveals release date, and it’s coming soon

Unknown Worlds has finally put a firm date on Subnautica 2’s long-awaited Early Access launch. The new Subnautica 2 Early Access Cinematic Trailer confirmed that players can dive in adventures on May 14, 2026. The sequel’s path to release has been turbulent, marked by delays and a high-profile clash between developer Unknown Worlds and publisher Krafton, which makes the new trailer a breath of fresh air after a long dive.

Subnautica 2 Early Access cinematic trailer reveals a potential new frontier

The trailer, uploaded to Subnautica’s official YouTube channel, jumps straight in with a crew of underwater explorers, highlighting the game’s new co-op system. While one diver looks for treasure, the others are swiftly taken out by underwater creatures.

What follows is a thrilling escape sequence for the remaining member, jumping into their ship before it crashes onto a rock formation above the surface. The short cinematic ends with the diver gazing upon a large structure above the water. The trailer’s final shot hints at world above the surface, a second frontier for players to explore in Subnautica 2.

Subnautica 2 Early Access Release Date Revealed

Subnautica 2 enters Early Access on May 14, 2026, after originally being targeted for a 2025 launch window. At launch, the game will be available PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on Xbox Series X|S through Xbox Game Preview and Xbox Game Pass.

Unknown Worlds expects the Early Access period to run for around two to three years, following a similar open development model to the original Subnautica, with the team building out the game iteratively alongside community feedback.

The May 14 date comes after months of squabbling between developer Unknown Worlds, and Krafton. Krafton overhauled Unknown Worlds’ leadership in 2025, pushing Early Access from its original window and publicly argued that a premature launch would “irreversibly harm” the franchise.

A court subsequently ordered former CEO Ted Gill reinstated, and both parties eventually aligned on a May 2026 Early Access window, which has now been confirmed.

What to expect from Subnautica 2 at launch

Subnautica 2 is set on a brand-new alien ocean world, promising fresh biomes ranging from shallow coral fields to bioluminescent deep-sea zones, each filled with new creatures and secrets. While the single-player mode retains its sense of isolation in the unknown, the game will also introduce multiplayer co-op with upto four players, giving a new dimension to Subnautica’s gameplay.

“Expanding on what fans loved about the previous games in the series, Subnautica 2 will deepen the experience with new biomes, from towering underwater cliffs to lush coral fields, each filled with unique creatures and hidden mysteries. As players dive deeper, they will uncover the secrets at the heart of planet.”—Krafton

The studio has also confirmed there will be no microtransactions, battle passes, or season passes. The game is already available to wishlist on Steam ahead of its May 14 launch.
