Submarine rescue firm wins multi-million pound China deal

A Scottish-based submarine rescue specialist has won a multi-million pound contract with a Chinese customer.

Under the deal JFD, which has bases in Inchinnan, near Glasgow, and Aberdeen, will design and build submarine rescue equipment including deep search and rescue vessels for the China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co Ltd.

JFD supplies rescue equipment and training to 80 countries and 33 of the world's navies including the Royal Navy, Australian, Indian, Singapore, and South Korean Navies, as well as providing the NATO Submarine Rescue System.

Nick Henry, chief executive officer of parent firm James Fisher, said: "This contract award underlines JFD's position as market leader in the submarine rescue market, safeguarding the lives of submariners and providing a comprehensive submarine rescue capability to organisations around the world."

The JFD business was created in 2014 through the merger of James Fisher Defence and Aberdeen-based Divex. In 2015 JFD also acquired the National Hyperbaric Centre in the city.

In June this year, Glasgow ship mobilisation firm Malin React teamed up with underwater specialist JFD to provide a worldwide emergency submarine rescue service.

The agreement is designed to ensure rapid vessel mobilisation of JFD’s submarine rescue assets anywhere in the world, minimising the time to rescue.
