In the mid-price range, Skip-Hop cannot be beaten. The bags are durable, come in a great range of styles and sizes and look 'normal' enough not to have 'baby changing bag' written all over them (see: Boots parenting club bag. If you've had a child in the last few years, you know the one I mean). For a smallish bag there is a surprising amount of space inside and it's very lightweight, which is a huge plus when toting a child around too. The plastic case for wipes is extremely robust and the bag has almost magical powers to resist dirt. Photograph: PR

The really clever thing about this sporty-style changing bag is the different ways you can wear it - as a backpack, as a messenger bag or clipped to a buggy. Though you'd think the straps would get in the way with these transformations, they actually all tuck away. It contains a changing pouch, mat, bottle insulator and bag for dirty nappies. Another clever multi-use bag - again, it's usable both as a rucksack and a messenger-style tote bag slung over one shoulder. Rather than being a gimmick, in a changing bag this is a genuinely useful function as you never know when you might suddenly have to go hands-free and carry an unhappy bawling baby.
There are plenty of pockets inside, and the compartment for bottles is kept well away from the one for less, um, fragrant objects. The key clip is handy too - saves fumbling at the front door with baby under one arm and bag under the other ... Photograph: PR

For vegetarians or vegans in search of a stylish, non-leather bag, look no further than Matt and Nat. This gorgeous bag has impeccable eco-credentials - obviously no animals are harmed but it's also made of recycled bottles. There's a separate detachable strap for over-the-shoulder use, a phone pocket at the back and plenty more inside. It also includes a changing pad Photograph: PR

A simple, classic unisex design, the OiOi bag is lined with camouflage print so definitely a good purchase for those who find all the floral options a bit twee. It has all the essentials - insulated side pockets for bottles or snacks, a strap to fix to buggy, plenty of other pockets, changing mat, a plastic wipes case, a key clip and so on. Another great practical feature is the metal feet on the base, which means when you put it on the floor, it doesn't immediately fall over and get trampled on by small grubby feet Photograph: PR

What's that you say? £387 for a changing bag? Yes indeed. But if you want luxury and practicality, this is the one for you. It's stuffed with pockets, an extremely comfortably padded changing mat and all the usuals - but unusually the entire inside of the bag can be removed (see here for a YouTube demonstration). This means not only can you use that separately, should you so wish, but that also, once you are done with nappies, you can just shed all the practical elements and have a luxury leather handbag Photograph: PR

Again, firmly at the luxury end of the market, this soft leather bag is designed to be unisex, so hey, at least two of you get a posh bag ... The many pockets are, as you can see, a good size and the bag itself will also fit a laptop, so useful for work too. As with the Rubizu, the baby changing element of the bag is removable. There's also a detachable pocket pouch for storing small items such as Sudocrem or lip balm Photograph: PR

By Anya Hindmarch
Finally, one for label lovers. This Anya Hindmarch "emergency" kit is basically a travel bag for babies, to be popped inside another case or bag. Though it's got the baby reference firmly on it, it would make a very good travel vanity case once its baby functions are fulfilled. Insider are numerous pockets for different items, and a nylon changing mat Photograph: PR

If you have no wish for another bag in your life, then consider this. This brilliant fold-up changing mat with padded headrest, plastic case for wipes, and pocket for nappies and other miscellaneous paraphernalia is worth every penny. I bought this several years ago, have used it virtually every day since and it still looks good as new. It fits under the pushchair, in a suitcase, in a large handbag - anywhere, in short. It's also brilliant for travelling as it provides another space to put down your baby. It comes in a variety of nice patterns or block colours. If you applied that hideous cost-per-use equation beloved of women's magazines this would probably have cost me 0.00000002p per outing Photograph: PR
