Style with Demelza De Burca: Banish Brexit blues with disco fashion

When in doubt, disco! Banish those Brexit blues with fashion’s response to these uncertain times.

Disco’s glory days have once again become the inspiration for designers for their autumn winter collections.

Top US fashion star Michael Kors zoned in on the '70s era, the time when he first arrived to New York, when the struggle for equal rights, the energy crisis, and the Watergate scandal were at the forefront of news.

The hedonistic disco craze was a way of escaping from the social constraints and depressing political and environmental issues.

Commenting on his AW19 collection, Kors said: “I think when times are tough, and let’s be honest, the world is a little crazy right now, romance and fashion are the ultimate tonic.”

At NYFW, Kors threw a fashion show worthy of famous NY club Studio 54 with Barry Manilow belting his mega-hit Copacabana on a glittery stage and rock muse Patti Hansen walking the runway.

“A little Bianca [Jagger], a little Bette [Midler]. It’s like they all went to the party and borrowed a little bit from each other,” he said.

Kors wasn’t the only designer to look back to the era. Fellow US designer Tommy Hilfiger paraded disco icon Grace Jones in a gold bodysuit and striped lamé blazer, which is part of his new collaboration with actress Zendaya.

Models in slinky jersey dresses and rib-knits discoed their way down the runway at Staud.

Sparkles were given a modern makeover from draped dresses to fringing and portraiture at Halpern, Molly Goddard and 16Arlington.

Meanwhile, dramatic head-to-toe sequins were seen at Alexander McQueen in the form of full-length, statement gowns.

Dare we mention the C-word too early in the season, but the disco trend will no doubt be a big factor in our festive wardrobes.

The high street is already stocking up on sparkly numbers, do the hustle in Boohoo’s long-sleeve mini dress, a bargain at just €39.

But it’s Zara’s sublime scene-stealing, not for wall-flowers, red sequin suit that steals the show this season.
