New fashion crush alert. Jen Brill – a name surely destined for fashion lights? – is a photographers’ agent. Though if you google her, “Chanel ambassador” also features rather heavily. Anyway, Brill is a Christopher Kane fan, as seen here wearing his spring 2011’s Princess-Margaret-goes-neon dress, styled with a current-season Kane –embroidered floral leather biker jacket. Let’s face it, she looks proper fashion – ie it’s a bit wrong and lots of people won’t get it. Photograph: Dario Cantatore/Getty Images
And . . . welcome to The Briefing’s French Chic Is Marvellous lecture part 672. Tired of the breton? Swap for Jane Birkin and a fag- chuffing – don’t do it kids – Serge Gainsbourg. Sass up by tucking in to a neat, slim (possibly leather) pencil skirt.

Everyone knows by now – or should do if they’re up to speed – that the country look has been adopted by the city this season. Cue every man (and probably his dog) in a quilted coat or Barbour-style jacket. M&S’s new Heritage is properly on the money for this trend. Think wax jackets, a bit of a cricket jumper, shawl collars and a tweed jacket with elbow patches.

You need to get your (ice) skates on if you want to bag a piece of limited edition Valentino for Gap, destined to sell like billy-o from this Saturday. The seven piece collection includes an on-trend combat-slack complete with a paper bag waist and this bolero with 3D ruffles. A great anti-party party look, no?

2010 started off as the year of the satchel – then came the mini-handbag. MaxMara’s new Margaux collection features this fine specimen which ties these two trends together. Plus it has a whiff of fashion’s current favourite decade: the 1970s. There is also a larger style in red, which is worth investigating.
