STV stars put their reputations on the line for Scotland-wide online pub quiz

Four of STV News’ most familiar faces are about to show Scotland whether they are as bright as they look.

STV News at Six anchor John MacKay, weatherman Sean Batty, entertainment reporter Laura Boyd, and sports presenter Chris Harvey will all take part in a super-sized online pub quiz – titled Are You Smarter Than An STV Presenter? – which is being hosted live on Facebook tonight.

They will compete against each other – and hundreds of other Scots – to raise money for the STV Children’s Appeal.

And a nervous John is hoping he can call on his “anchorman authority” to claim the right answers - even if he doesn’t know them.

He joked: “History, geography, philosophy… I know nothing about any of them.

“But given that news anchors are among the most trusted people in society, who is going to argue with my answers if I say them with anchorman authority?”

Laura Boyd reckons John MacKay is a "wise old owl" (SUNDAY MAIL)

The quiz has been organised by the STV Children’s Appeal in partnership with The Stayin’ Inn, an online events organisation which was established in March last year to run interactive quizzes for Scots stuck at home during the first national lockdown.

The “virtual pub” has since won a legion of regulars and raised over £80,000 for charity through its weekly events.

Are You Smarter Than An STV Presenter? will put the STV stars’ general knowledge to the test to find out which of them is the broadcaster’s most intelligent presenter. But John, Sean, Laura and Chris could be in for a somewhat embarrassing evening as the quiz is also open to members of the public, and there’s no telling just how high – or low – on the scoreboard the STV presenters will rank.

The event is free to enter but, just like all good pub quizzes, competitors are encouraged to take part in an online raffle, with 100 per cent of all proceeds going to the STV Children’s Appeal.

Laura added: “I think MacKay could be the one to watch. He’s like the wise old owl of the newsroom that we all go to for advice. It’s certainly going to be entertaining, and all for such an amazing cause too.”
