STV reporter soaked with water by fuming Edinburgh jogger who threatened to 'slap' her

A journalist has spoken out after she was drenched in water by a fuming Edinburgh jogger for "taking up too much pavement".

STV journalist Laura Alderman had been filming shots of Edinburgh Zoo when a woman confronted her on Corstorphine Road on Monday afternoon.

The runner was caught on camera threatening to "slap" the reporter after purposely pouring water over Alderman and her camera kit.

Taking to Twitter following the incident, Alderman said: “So an hour ago this member of the public threw water all over me, my camera kit and said I needed a slap for apparently taking up too much of the pavement whilst out filming ie: doing my job.

"I’ve reported it to police but why oh why is it ok to assault key workers?"

She added: “This woman told me 'if it wasn’t for social distancing, I’d slap you’ then later on camera says again ‘a slap is what you need’. Lovely member of the public.

“Then jogged off towards Belgrave Road in Edinburgh. I only came out for some pretty shots of Edinburgh Zoo.

“I told her I was a key worker and she accused me of ‘taking the moral high ground’.”

STV editor Steven Ladurantaye later clarified that his reporter had been filming shots of Edinburgh Zoo's "closed" sign as part of coverage on how the "world-famous facility is coping under difficult conditions".

The government classes all journalists reporting on coronavirus as “key workers” since the start of the outbreak.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers received a report of a disturbance on Corstorphine Road in Edinburgh around 2pm on Monday, 4 May.

"Enquiries are being carried out to establish the full circumstances and these are at an early stage."
