Sven Mislintat has revealed that Leeds United had a very strong interest in Nicolas Gonzalez.
The Stuttgart striker was heavily linked with the Whites after he revealed in June he wanted a fresh challenge.
That led to rumours that the Whites would make a move for the player, whose 15 goals helped Stuttgart back into the Bundesliga last season.
Leeds are keen on a striker this summer and have been heavily linked with a number of options.
Gonzelez has previously been compared with the legendary Mario Kempes and Marcelo Bielsa is presumably well aware of his compatriot's attributes.
Speaking to Transfermarkt, Mislintat revealed that Leeds had already held talks for the Argentina international but that the deal has gone quiet.
"We had a lot of hot rumours at the beginning," said Mislintat.
"(With Leeds it was) even very concrete.
"There were serious conversations and rapprochements.
"But it never presented itself in such a way that it would have been interesting for Nico or for us."
Mislintat also confirmed that Stuttgart would be unable to refuse any offers of around £25m for the striker.
Yet, even with the likes of AC Milan also linked to the 22-year-old, former Arsenal man Mislintat does not expect any deal to be done this summer.
"Let's be honest: If someone comes on October 1 and puts a fabulous sum of 30 million euros plus on the table for Nico or another player - who should refuse something like that?," said Mislintat.
"I don't see it coming either."
