Nottingham Forest could be part of a regionalised Championship next season, according to one report.
And it is an idea which has stoked a lot of debate among Reds fans and those of their rivals.
The Sun on Sunday claimed a radical proposal is being explored which would see the Championship, League One and League Two divided into north and south sections.
Forest would be in a northern Championship division, along with the likes of arch-enemies Derby County and league leaders Leeds United - but away from current second-placed team West Bromwich Albion, Fulham and Brentford.
It is said this is seen as a way of cutting down on travel and accommodation for clubs as they deal with the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Teams would play just 11 home games in a shortened, 22-match campaign.
The Sun on Sunday states: “A league revamp would involve the 12 teams in each sub-division clashing home and away before coming together for play-offs to decide promotion and perhaps relegation.
“This would, in theory, reduce the risk of the competition having to shut down in the wake of new Covid-19 outbreaks. It would also cut travel and accommodation costs.”
The radical proposal understandably caused a stir on social media. Here's a flavour of the reaction from Forest, West Brom and Leeds fans.
Forest fans
Cheeks: Could be an interesting solution I suppose. In my experience, around 40 of 46 Championship games per season are utterly turgid anti-football anyway so we'll all live longer for having to watch less of that garbage.
Surreyred: On a similar scenario, I would not be opposed to a restructure if the Premier League decided to have two Premier Leagues (north and south) consisting of twenty teams in each division with each division’s champion meeting in a Wembley final to decide the nation’s champions. No relegation from either division and no promotion into it.
Red1968: So under this system clubs that do not make the playoff stages (however they are structured) will have to survive on half the match day receipts of a traditional season. Season ticket receipts will be halved. Many of the lower league clubs are on their knees already so I cannot see this being an attractive proposition.
Mike Wood: Am all over that idea!
Jay Jay James Bar: Rubbish idea
Albion fans
Jas Mann: This would be a RADICAL change for sure - it just cannot work - will destroy professional football outside the PL.
Baggiewire: If it is being considered to be played with fans present can we please somehow get into the northern group. Otherwise it would kill away days.
Leeds fans
Arron McCourt: This is the stupidest idea I've ever heard.
James McGlone: The EFL get dafter by the week.
Gerard Kenney: Every club in the EFL will go to the wall if that happens unless you play every team in your region four times.
Warwick Williams: EFL are clowns man.
