'Stupid' woman blasted by zoo for climbing into enclosure 'to feed monkeys Cheetos'

A woman has been called "stupid and lucky" after she climbed into a zoo enclosure - and allegedly fed monkeys Hot Cheetos.

Keepers at the zoo in El Paso, Texas say the woman endangered both herself and the primates.

Bizarre footage posted on Instagram shows the woman sitting under a waterfall and feeding the animals, named Libby and Sunday.

She then wades through water in the enclosure and is helped out by a passer-by.

It emerged on Monday that the woman, an employee at a law firm, has lost her job as a result of her actions.

Joe Montisano, the zoo's director, is said to have branded her as "stupid and lucky" after the incident came to light.

And keeper Mason Kleist told local TV station ABC 7: "These are primates we're talking about, they could do some substantial damage to you.

"They may be small monkey's but they can take you to the ground if they wanted to."

The keeper added that the monkeys have a specialised diet so her feeding them could cause stomach problems and bowel disruptions.

And he claimed that the woman put the monkeys at risk of catching Covid-19.

Mr Kleist said: "Anything that we have they could get as well so Covid is no different.

"We took the necessary steps to prevent them from getting that, so for someone to just go in there and give them food from their hands could just ruin that."

Reports suggested that the zoo had been considering pressing charges against the woman.

And it has not emerged that she has lost her job at Lovett Law Firm, who posted about the incident on Facebook.

A statement said: "We learned this morning that the individual who was filmed trespassing in the spider monkey enclosure of the El Paso Zoo was an employee of Lovett Law Firm.

"She has been terminated.

"The firm has always been a strong supporter of animals and animal advocacy. We absolutely do not condone this irresponsible and reckless behavior.

"We support the El Paso Zoo and our thoughts go out to the spider monkeys, Libby and Sunday, and hope that they will recover from this very traumatic experience."

Social media posts suggested the woman, who has not been identified, fed the monkeys Hot Cheetos, but the zoo has not confirmed this.
