‘Stupid idiots’ dump smouldering BBQ at Scots beauty spot sparking massive forest blaze

A massive forest fire which destroyed more than two acres of lush Scots woodland was caused by ‘reckless’ visitors, it has been revealed.

An abandoned disposable BBQ was discovered by fire crews who were called to the scene on the Dunecht Estate in Aberdeenshire on Tuesday afternoon.

A specialist forest fire unit was sent to tackle the fierce blaze alongside three Scottish Fire and Rescue Service appliances.

Thankfully, they managed to control the flames before they reached nearby farming land and conservation woodland.

Sharing pictures of the emergency response, the estate said: “Yesterday we were notified of an out of control fire within Estate woodland.

“Our Head Forester, Gamekeeper and Rural Surveyor attended the incident in advance of the Fire Service arriving on site. Our forestry team arrived to assist the fire service and local farmers were also on hand to help if required.

“An area of 2.5 acres was damaged but luckily the fire was controlled before it reached an area of conservation woodland and a nearby farm. The cause of the fire was discovered to be an unattended BBQ.

“The fire service was on site from 3.30-9pm with three tenders and a specialist forest fire support unit, all for a completely avoidable incident.

“If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the Estates Office.

“Many thanks to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, our staff and the local farmers who attended.”

They added: “We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to please exercise your right of access responsibly and urge people to avoid using any type of fire (BBQ or campfire) in wild areas during these dry weather conditions and never light a fire in woodland, peatland areas or near buildings.

“Dispose of litter and cigarettes responsibly, even if this means taking it home with you.

“Call 999 and ask for the Fire Service if you see an out of control fire and follow the Scottish Government’s Outdoor Access Code.”
