Stunning video captures lightning over Alnwick Castle during stormy weather

Awe-inspiring weather combined with the beautiful scenery of the North East when a lightning show was captured at Alnwick Castle.

Forks of lightning lit up the night sky above the ancient castle in Northumberland at around 11pm on Friday.

The stunning footage was captured by photographer Jane Coltman and she has slowed down part of the video to show the power of the storm.

Flashes of purple light can be seen above the historic castle, which is home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland.

Alnwick Castle and Gardens, which are a popular tourist attraction, is open as usual today despite the extreme weather over the weekend.

However their outdoor activities and special events including broomstick training, archery and historic falconry will be unable to go ahead as scheduled.

A thunderstorm warning is still in place around the North East until 6am on Sunday.

The Met Office has warned that there could be flash flooding and damage from lightning strikes.

Flash flooding has already hit Alnwick with a deluge of water covering the Bondgate Without road after a torrential downpour on Friday.

A house was also hit by a lighting strike during an earlier storm in Northumberland on Friday.

Fire crews were called to Sea Road in Embleton after lightning hit the house and started a roof fire.

Nobody was hurt at the home, believed to be a holiday let.
