17 heartwarming photos of Merseyside's Christmas lights through the decades

Although Christmas is set to be very different this year, Merseyside's festive lights will still look spectacular.

After a year like no other, we weren't able to watch the sparkling lights be turned on like normal but the city centre still looks fantastic.

With lights decorating Albert Dock and all around town, this year's decorations have lit the city up.

Hundreds of thousands of people have turned out to watch the festive lights get turned on in years gone by, as families love making the annual trip to see them.

Throughout the years light displays in Merseyside have attracted huge crowds to come and admire them, as displays change from year to year.

Starting off humbly with a large tree adorned in lights, we've watched spectacular displays get bigger and bigger.

Here we take a look back at some of the displays in years gone by on Merseyside.

Christmas 1995

Church Street looked stunning as the display was set up on November 16.

Christmas 1986

Nine years earlier thousands of people descended on Church Street to see the display, which went up on November 27.

Christmas 1980

Comedian Les Dawson was in Liverpool for the Christmas light switch on in 1980.

He was joined by the Lord Mayor Cllr James Ross on December 5 to turn the lights on.

Christmas 1969

Shoppers were packed in on Church Street on November 28 to see the glittering lights

Christmas 1991

A two-year-old girl can be seen enjoying the magic of Christmas in 1991 as she's pictured on her mum's shoulders on November 22.

Chloe and her mum Vanda McDonough, from Childwall, were pictured on Church Street.

Christmas 1993

Three adorable children were pictured on November 19, 1993 marvelling at the display.

Christmas 1961

Birkenhead's illuminations lit up Grange Road in 1961 as a showpiece was installed.

A stunning picture of it was taken on November 30.

Christmas 1968

A quieter Church Street, without shoppers, was captured on December 13 as the display glittered above.

Christmas 1982

Liverpool's city centre Christmas tree was switched on by Tommy Steele, as he's pictured with eight-year-old Claire Ryan, from Speke.

Christmas 1954

A huge crowd of carol singers can be seen under an enormous tree in St George's plateau, on December 20.

A group of spectators can be later seen admiring the tree after snowfall in the city.

Christmas 2016

Liverpool legend John Barnes was there to mark the special occasion in Birkenhead in 2016.

He switched the lights on in Hamilton Square.

Christmas 1976

A whole host of fashionable shoppers were captured on Church Street getting their Christmas shopping in December.

The 1970s Christmas display can be seen above.

Christmas 1972

The same decade saw comedian Tom O'Connor at the Christmas light display in Liverpool city centre.

Christmas 1963

Flintstones cartoon characters can be seen getting carried to the roundabout at Charing Cross, in Birkenhead, in 1968.

The lights were tested before their official switch on on November 23.

Christmas 2014

Jack Frost unveiled the festive display to shoppers in 2014, on Church Street.

Christmas 1969

Ken Dodd stepped in to switch the lights on on November 28.

He was pictured on Church Street with Paula Clee, six, from Toxteth.
