Stunning pictures show International Space Station passing over Nottingham - here's how to see it

These stunning pictures show the International Space Station (ISS) passing over Nottinghamshire.

Every 24 hours, the space station completes 16 orbits of the Earth while travelling at around five miles per second - and it will be visible across the county this week and beyond.

Nottingham photographer Leigh Windridge captured the 357-foot structure passing over Bulwell at around 11.45pm on May 20, resulting in this remarkable image.

Further sightings will be possible until Tuesday, June 2.

Tonight (May 21), the ISS will make another two passes.

The first pass over Nottingham will take place at around 10.53pm and will remain visible for six minutes.

A few hours later at around 12.30am on Friday morning (May 22), it will make another pass and will be visible for three minutes.

Mr Windridge's shot of the ISS was created by stacking 10 long-exposure shots, and it is typically visible to the naked eye as it orbits the Earth at a height of just over 400km.

Another avid astronomy photographer, Michael Bilbie, also managed to capture the ISS passing over Long Eaton on May 20.

He said it made three passes, resulting in an image which clearly displays its flight path across the night sky.

The ISS, due to its speed, completes an orbit roughly every 90 minutes and travels through 16 sunsets and sunrises.

It has been continuously occupied since November 2000 by 240 individuals, including British astronaut Tim Peake.

Remarkably, Nasa says the space station's living space is larger than a six-bedroom house and is even home to a gym, which helps prevent loss of muscle and bone mass in low gravity.
