Stunning pictures of Princess Diana visiting Merseyside in 1990 and 1995

Stunning and heartfelt pictures of Princess Diana during two visits to Merseyside during the 1990s have been unearthed.

The Liverpool ECHO archives include a collection of photos showing the people's princess visiting sick children at Alder Hey and opening a new hospital during visits in 1991 and 1995.

2021 marks 40 years since the Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles, becoming a member of the Royal Family.

And, with the release of the Diana Spencer biopic now in cinemas (starring Kristen Stewart, Jack Farthing, and Timothy Spall), the ECHO thought it would be a perfect time to revisit the princess' famous visits to the North West.

The first in 1990 perfectly encapsulated Diana's amazing kindness and morality, as well as her penchant for charity work.

She surprised patients at Alder Hey Children's Hospital and the images of her speaking to young people there would become synonymous with the Princess and her personality.

Her next visit, in 1995, was even more poignant given what was happening in her personal life, as by the end of 1995 her and Charles had agreed to divorce.

Take a look at this bumper gallery of Princess Diana visiting Liverpool in 1991 and 1995:

Dressed in an immaculate orange suit, the Princess of Wales opened the Liverpool Women’s Hospital in Crown Street before touring the Project Rosemary housing scheme in Toxteth.

She was an instant hit with the schoolchildren and parents who’d queued to meet her on her walkabout, weighing her down with flowers and gifts.

Sadly, as we all know, Diana was killed following a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.

She was buried on a small island in the grounds of her ancestral home, Althorp House, in Northampton.
