Stunning picture of tornado as stormy phenomenon swirls over countryside - and there's more heavy rain to come

Here's an amazing image of a tornado spotted during the stormy conditions that ripped across southern England - and there's a risk of more wild weather on the way.

The tornado was photographed near to Wellington, Somerset, on Friday when the remnants of Spanish-named Storm Miguel battered the south-west of the UK.

The image of the 'weak' weather phenomenon was posted on Twitter by the Met Office, reports Somerset Live.

A tornado normally occurs when a violently whirling mass of air, known as a vortex, forms beneath storm clouds, the Met office explained.

The tornado then moves across the surface causing severe damage or destruction to objects in its path.

More wet and windy weather is expected to strike across the UK this week.

How to stay safe during a thunderstorm

Large expanses of the country will see heavy rain as low pressure edges across the country.

Places most likely to see the highest totals are Lincolnshire, the west and north Midlands, Cheshire and northeast Wales. Southern England could also see some high rain accumulations of up to 60-70mm in places.

Multiple weather warnings are in place with a chance that heavy prolonged rainfall could lead to local flooding and disruption to transport, especially during the middle of the week.

The Met Office warning states: "Heavy, rain will push north and then westwards across much of south and east England on Monday.

"Whilst some places will miss the worst of the rain 10-25 mm of rain may occur quite widely, with some areas potentially seeing up to 60 mm and much of this falling in less than six hours.

"There is also a chance that thunder may develop later in the day over parts of East Anglia and the far southeast of England.
