Stunning photos unearthed of Bold Street looking classy at Christmas

Bold Street is, without doubt, one of the most eclectic and vibrant streets in Liverpool city centre.

Once Liverpool's top shopping street for more than half a century, it was compared to London's Bond Street due to the excellence of goods on offer to those who could afford them.

Now partly pedestrianised, one of the biggest changes to happen to Bold Street in recent years was a huge transformation in 2020 to install outside seating in the wake of the pandemic.

Over the last decade, the popular street has established itself as a foodie heaven and home to many of the city's best independent restaurants offering cuisines from around the world.

The street itself was originally laid out as a ropewalk - a long thin area of land used in the manufacture of rope - in the late 18th Century.

They used to measure the rope from the top of Bold Street to the bottom because it was the standard length needed for sailing ships.

It was named after Jonas Bold, a slave merchant, sugar trader and banker, who became Mayor of Liverpool in 1802.

Bold Street now houses an eclectic mix of mostly independent shops and eateries from every culture and ethnic group.

Throughout the decades, many of the city's most fondly remembered shops and cafes have called the street home, including Hairy Records, Cafe Berlin, Morgan's 50p shop and Cooper's Food Hall which used to occupy the beautiful art deco building now home to LEAF.

Dominated by St Luke’s Church at the top end of the street, it isn’t difficult to see why so many are drawn to this most Bohemian section of the city.

While searching through the Mirrorpix archives, we came across some particularly evocative photographs of Bold Street taken around Christmas time from 1959 to 1968.

The photos show how the street has been decked out over Christmas through those decades, with crowds of shoppers milling through the streets lined with vintage shop fronts and classic cars.
