Stunning photos as Claremorris, Co Mayo turns into winter wonderland after snowfall

Here are some stunning photos showing the outskirts of a rural town being covered in a blanket of snow.

The images were taken on Monday evening as snow showers battered the west of Ireland.

And Met Eireann issued a nationwide Status Yellow snow-ice warning on Monday night over fears there was more to come.

With spring just around the corner, locals in Claremorris, Co Mayo were treated to a final taste of winter.

One Irish Mirror reader sent in these pictures which show several inches of snowfall covering walkways, trees and fences.

And although the weather alert expires at 12pm on Tuesday, the weather chiefs have warned of more wintry showers later in the day.

Some parts of the country may also experience hail and thunder showers on Tuesday afternoon.

A forecaster said: "A cold and frosty start this morning with icy stretches on untreated surfaces and lying snow in places.

"Today there will be a mix of sunshine and scattered wintry showers, the showers frequent over the western half of the country with a risk of hail and thunder there.

"Highest temperatures of 4C to 7C in fresh and gusty westerly winds, strong along Atlantic coasts."

Any wintry falls on Tuesday night are expected to hit the north and west, as well as places on high ground.

It will be a chilly night, especially for eastern counties, as temperatures are set to fall to as low as 0C.

The Met Eireann forecaster said: "Scattered showers will continue tonight, mainly of rain but turning wintry in parts of the north and west and on high ground.

"The showers will ease towards dawn. Lows of between 0C and 2C in the eastern half of the country early in the night with some frost patches but temperatures increasing to between 2C to 5C by morning countrywide. Westerly winds will be mostly moderate."
