Stunning photo captures rare moon halo in sky over Wales

Those who looked up over north Wales earlier this week may have witnessed a rare lunar phenomenon without realising it.

But a few lucky sky watchers caught the celestial sight on camera.

Conditions were just right on Thursday for a moon halo, also known as a 22 degree halo, to form in the night sky.

Mel Hughes, of Colwyn Bay, was one of a few people to catch the stunning sight on camera after a walk up Pen yr Ole Wen in Snowdonia.

He posted a picture of the rare sight to Facebook, writing: "Well worth the walk up Pen yr Ole Wen last night.

"This is a 22 degree moon halo over Tryfan. [I've] never seen one so clear."

The phenomenon occurs when light passes through clouds made of millions of tiny ice crystals high up in the earth's atmosphere.

The hexagon-shaped crystals bend the light at a 22-degree angle creating a perfect ring around the moon.

This ring can be distinct or faint depending on the how much light passes through the clouds. The process is similar to how sunlight creates a rainbow in the sky.

According to folklore such rings indicate the unsettled weather is nearing.
