Stunning park artwork takes visitors on walk down memory lane

Visitors to Glencoats Park will be able to take a walk down memory lane as Paisley’s history is celebrated in a new outdoor art project.

The initiative, developed by Pals of the Privies, has seen a series of images synonymous with Paisley and the Coats family painted on to rocks in the park.

The Paisley Pattern and a loom to reflect the town’s cotton past sit alongside fairies and images of other woodland creatures to capture the imagination of the park’s youngest visitors.

Funded by Paths For All and NatureScot, the artwork was created by renowned mural artist Dair Graff with the support of his sister and designer Neave McCormick.

Both organisations backed the project for its potential to get people walking and also enjoying the natural environment around them.

Karen Campbell, of Pals of the Privies, said she could not be more pleased with the results.

“It looks amazing,” she said. “The whole point of the project has been to encourage people to use the paths, to get walking and get out and about and this artwork will undoubtedly encourage people to visit the park and the paths that run through it.

“We didn’t want to just put any pictures in these spaces, but something that involved the culture of this area and something that would remind children what this area was once known for.”

A true community effort, children from the local area washed and prepped the rocks ahead of Dair painting his collection of images which aim to appeal to all generations - from youngsters undertaking a fairy hunt to history buffs exploring art from where the Coats family once admired their palatial gardens.
