Stunning nighttime lava display in Hawaii captured on video by US military

This stunning footage shows rivers of lava pouring from a volcano close to a Hawaii town.

Six weeks after the most recent round of eruptions from the Kilauea volcano began the state's Big Island is still feeling the effects of the increased activity.

In this video, which was filmed and released by the US Department of Defence, lava can be seen flowing steadily around Pahoe, which lies east of Kilauea.

More than 180 explosions and earthquakes rocked the volcano at its summit yesterday. One explosive event in particular happened just before midday local time which caused ash and gas plumes that towered to nearly 10,000ft.

More than 400 homes have been destroyed since the volcanic activity started.

Volcanologists who have been monitoring Kilauea’s behaviour over the past month are now observing a new, seemingly calmer volcanic phase, but it's still very hard to predict when the activity will stop
