Stunning Leith park built by Edinburgh Botanic Gardens to be ripped out by tramworks

One of Leith's limited green spaces is under threat due to impending tram works in the area.

Leith's Discovery Garden, first installed almost 20 years ago in collaboration with Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens could be replaced with paving and ‘specimen’ trees as shown by project drawings of the ongoing tramworks.

Now, locals residents of Leith Harbour and Newhaven have asked conservation campaign group to help me them save the Ocean Terminal Discovery Garden.

Conservation campaign group Trees of Edinburgh wrote of the importance of saving the green space, reporting that: "For many of the people living in surrounding flats, when lockdown hit on those hot days it was the only garden they had."

"Gardens are not constructed, they are grown. This makes them literally irreplaceable. City gardens are not a luxury, they are a necessity."

Designer of the gardens, Harrison Stevens, tweeted: "These little green spaces are so valuable to us. As the original designer of these gardens it is sad to see them under threat, maintenance will always be its burden unfortunately."

A spokesperson for Edinburgh City Council said: “We’re aware of the community’s request to retain the garden at Ocean Terminal.

"Representatives from Trams to Newhaven will attend any meeting convened between the community and Ocean Terminal to assist where possible.”

Ways to help the campaign to save Leith's Discovery Garden can be viewed on Leith Harbour and Newhaven Community Council's website.
