Stunning images show Penshaw Monument illuminated red ahead of Remembrance Day

Stunning images show Penshaw Monument illuminated red ahead of Remembrance Day.

The landmark is one of many lit up across the North East to commemorate the end of World War One, and to recognise the sacrifice made in other wars.

Owned by the National Trust, the stunning pictures of the Grade I listed building were taken by Press Association photographer Owen Humphreys.

Sunderland City Council’s Northern Spire Bridge, Fulwell Mill, the White lighthouse in Seaburn, Keel Square, High Street West and The Beacon have also been illuminated red.

Newcastle Civic Centre and Gateshead Millennium Bridge have also turned red until the anniversary on November 11.

In County Durham there are a number of landmarks that are illuminated, including Durham Town Hall and County Hall, where a large poppy has been projected onto the front of the building.

It comes after traditional gatherings, parades and services were called off across the region due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sunderland City Council urged people to stay home to pay their respects but organised a series of online events.

A series of poignant short films have been created by the council with Lonely Tower Film and Media that include interviews with veterans who make each Remembrance Day in Sunderland special.

These films also include the story of the Sikh community's involvement in the First and Second World Wars and how Washington couple Mary and Terry Evans traced and visited the grave of their First World War ancestors in Belgium.

There will also be Opera Sunderland's The Soldier’s Return shown online, which is available to watch for free until November 30.
