Stunning images capture glowing blue bioluminescent plankton at Gower beach

Glowing sea life has created some magical scenes on the Gower coast.

A bright blue glow was captured in the waters of Caswell Bay earlier this week in the early hours. Sea sparkle, as it is sometimes known, is caused by phytoplankton, known as Noctiluca scintillans, an algae-like species which emits a blue glow when disturbed during warm weather conditions.

The bewitching sight was captured by hospital worker Lee McGrath on the popular Gower beach on Wednesday morning at around 3am. Mr McGrath, who works as theatres commodities coordinator at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, said he believed it was one of the first times the phenomenon had been captured this year.

He said: "It was lovely to see such a positive sight after the last year".

It's not the first time Mr McGrath has captured the sight, having produced similar photographs on Southerndown beach in Bridgend. It is usually spotted in warm coastal waters, like those in the Maldives and Tasmania, but can also be spotted in parts of Wales during the summer months - and might be seen over the coming weekend due to the warm weather forecast.

In previous years they have also been spotted at Aberavon and Anglesey, as well as Gower.

Waves and currents in warm waters disturb the plankton, causing the tiny organisms to produce light using a chemical called luciferin as a defence mechanism to draw predators towards the creature trying to eat the plankton.
