Stunning figures show Championship side Sheffield United earn more revenue than AC Milan

They may have suffered relegation from the Premier League last season, but Sheffield United earned more revenue over the past year than Italian giants AC Milan.

The Blades suffered a miserable year on the pitch, finishing rock bottom of the top flight after the exit of much-loved manager Chris Wilder.

The club also spent heavily in the transfer market, on the likes of Rhian Brewster. The youngster arrived from Liverpool for a club record fee of £23.5million but a year on from his big-money move he is still searching for his first league goal.

Despite their struggles on the pitch, United have made it into the top 30 clubs in Europe in one particular list.

In a study conducted by NetBet, it found out which European clubs make the most money per year.

All the usual contenders were near the top, including powerhouses Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

But it might have come as a surprise to many to see Sheffield United in the top 30.

The South Yorkshire side recorded revenue of £152million for the past year.

A big part of why the Blades made the cut comes down to the revenue generated by the TV rights in England’s top division, as well as the parachute payments they will receive from their relegation.

It sees them perched above one of the giants of the game, AC Milan.

The Rossoneri are historically one of the biggest teams in Italy - and indeed Europe - with 18 league titles to their name and seven Champions League trophies to boot.

But the survey has found they have dropped down nine places to 30th with a revenue of £148million per year.

On the pitch, there is a big gulf between Milan and the Blades this term. Whereas the Italians are back in the Champions League after a seven-year absence, United are yet to truly get going in the hustle and bustle of the Championship.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side are sitting 14th in the second tier and will be looking to go through the gears after the international break as they bid to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
