Stunning castle just over an hour from Glasgow named one of country's best for stargazing

To celebrate International Dark Sky Week, which is set to take place between April 16 -22, fans of the night sky will want to get outside under the stars to enjoy them in all of their glory.

However, though Glasgow has a few rural spots ideal for escaping light pollution, if you want to see the night sky in all of its glory, you really have to escape the city, and one site, not too far south of Glasgow, has just been hailed as one of the best in the UK.

The new study, conducted by travel booking site, Omio, has unveiled the best locations in the UK to see the stars clearly, looking at the Bortle Scale rating, level of clearance on the Southern Horizon and accessibility by transport of 199 locations to reveal the top 25 places that offer the best view of the stars in the UK.

One of six sites in Scotland picked out on the list, Loch Doon Castle lies just over an hour's drive from Glasgow and apparently offers the best chance to see the planets, Milky Way and shooting stars on a clear night.

The site of the former majestic stronghold is found close to southern Scotland's largest inland loch, with the area boasting some of the UK's darkest skies thanks to being part of the UK's first Dark Sky Park in the Galloway Forest Park.

The castle itself is looked after by the National Trust for Scotland and was reportedly built in the 13th century under the orders of Robert the Bruce or his father. It was originally found on an island in the middle of the loch but was taken down and rebuilt on the banks of the loch to preserve it from rising water levels in the 1930s.

If you head even further south, you'll find the rest of the Scottish entries, including the stunning Grey Mare's Tail waterfall, the Red Deer Range and Clatteringshaws Visitor Centre in Castle Douglas, the Loch Trool Trail in Galloway Forest Park, Scotland and the Kirroughtree Forest Visitor Centre in Newton Stewart.
