Stunning 1960s images show pensioners having the time of their lives at the seaside

There is no escaping the fact that sometimes the news can be a little depressing.

But sometimes the news archives can provide a very much-needed sport of light relief.

And there can be no better than these incredible photographs of pensioners enjoying a fun-filled day at the seaside.

On Tuesday, July 7, one of Liverpool's oldest charities, the League of Welldoers hosted an event in New Brighton, Wirral at a time when the Pier still existed and the New Brighton Tower in its full glory.

The Beach Boys' hit, I Get Around had just been number one in the charts and the James Bond movie Goldfinger was out in cinemas.

For younger readers, this is season three of The Crown when Tory MP Alec Douglas-Home briefly became Prime Minister before losing an election to Labour's Howard Wilson.

The wonderful pictures show the group of OAPs having a blast at the once-famous funfair.

Dressed in coats and hats, despite it being July, it must have been one of those classic British Summer days mixed with a chilly breeze and showers.

But that didn't stop this gathering of silver-haired seniors from having the time of their lives.

The joy on their faces as they crash into each other on the dodgems with child-like mischief in their eyes.

Two older ladies look a little startled after their ride on the ghost train and a gentleman looks like he is reliving all his childhood memories on the merry-go-round.
