Stunned police catch 13-year-old boy racer speeding at 90mph on M74

Police were stunned when they pulled over a car driving at 90mph on the motorway – and found a 13-year-old boy at the wheel.

Officers said the teen tearaway, who had nicked his mum’s vehicle, had five other children inside with him.

The youngster was caught after the car was spotted at 4am, being driven with full beams on, and ordered to stop. But the baby-faced thief refused to pull over and led police on a chase down the M74 between Lesmahagow and Larkhall.

Three girls and two boys, aged between 13 and 15, were also inside and said to have been upset when spoken to by police.

A source said: “Clearly the officers had no idea the car was being driven by a child when they pursued.

“Obviously they were very shocked when they realised all of the occupants were children.

“Thankfully the M74 is quiet at that time of the morning. The car is believed to have been his mother’s which he had taken without her knowledge.”

A police spokesman said a 13-year-old boy had been reported to the Children’s Reporter for road traffic offences.

The joyride mirrors a recent incident in Australia , where four children drove for 600 miles before being stopped by police.
