Stunned Clyde boss Danny Lennon tells his side to get basics right after rout

Shell-shocked Clyde boss Danny Lennon said his side must get back to basics and become harder to beat, after they were thumped 5-0 by Airdrie.

The Diamonds were 3-0 up and cruising in the first half thanks to Calum Gallagher's double and a strike by Dale Carrick, and Carrick added a penalty before Kyle Connell slammed in the fifth goal to complete a miserable day for the Bully Wee.

Lennon says he reckons that's the heaviest defeat he's had as Clyde boss, and said supporters deserved better.

He said: "That really hurts. I think it's my biggest defeat as Clyde manager and our supporters don't deserve that, but you've got to give yourself every opportunity, and Airdrie thoroughly deserved their victory.

"We have to do the basic parts of defending a lot better than what we have shown today and that was us putting an extra centre-back in to try and handle that."

Back-to-back defeats against Dumbarton and Peterhead before this demolition have left Clyde ninth in League One and Lennon knows he has a lot to do.

"It has been a challenging 10 days, to be perfectly honest, and we know within ourselves the quality that we do have in this squad - but it's quality you still have to go and produce.

"We know the quality side that Airdrie are, they're physical, the work very hard on set plays, but regardless of what shape you play, I thought the basics weren't there after 20 minutes, in defending properly, to be in the right place at the right time.

"Sometimes that can come when you're maybe rocked a little bit, or a little bit vulnerable, but football is very unforgiving, you don't have time to dwell.

"We have to dust ourselves down, take our medicine, look at the qualities that we have, but also the things that we're not bringing to games at this moment in time.

"One of our true strengths is that when we do click we're a very, very good side, there's no doubt about that, so we have to get back to the basics of doing all the things that we're good at and the first one of those is collectively working hard as a team and getting difficult to get beat again."
