Stuff a pumpkin! How to carve a turnip lantern and have a traditional Geordie Halloween

Your kids probably won't know, but Halloween lanterns were traditionally made out of turnips in Newcastle and the North East.

While it is much more common to see pumpkin lanterns in 2018, back in the 20th century Geordies were sent out by their mams carrying a with a candle inside.

Turnips have long been used as lanterns, thanks to a tradition which English Heritage says stems from an Irish folk tale. Immigrants took the idea to America, where they found pumpkins were much, much easier to carve. As Halloween 'Americanised', more Brits switched to pumpkin carving.

Readers' memories of carving their halloween turnips

If you want to wind the clock back - or show your kids how Halloween used to be - English Heritage has produced a video guide to making a Jack O'Lantern out of a turnip.

Please be careful with those knives.
