Study reveals most cost-effective and “Instagrammable” Irish road trips

A study carried out by Chill Insurance has revealed the top three road trips with the best value for money.

The study looked at eight of the top road trips across the country and took several costs into account.

These included petrol and diesel, the number of free activities and reasonably priced restaurants, the number of cycle routes as well as the number of Instagram “hotspots.”

1. Priest’s Leap and Caha Mountain Pass Scenic Loop Drive

Priest’s Leap and Caha Mountain Pass Scenic Loop Drive (Ireland Highlights)

Priest’s Leap and Caha Mountain Pass Scenic Loop Drive took the top spot as the best value for money. The trip which passes through Cork and Kerry has the highest mountain pass in Ireland and the third highest amount of cycle routes in the study. There are also 105 reasonably priced restaurants to choose from, according to the study.

2. The Burren Scenic Loop

The Burren Scenic Loop came in at number 2 with 98 free activities and 41 well-priced restaurants. This trip also came out on top as the most Instagram-worthy with 62,000 posts.

3. The Ring of Kerry

Ring of Kerry (Discover Ireland)

The Ring of Kerry boasted 206 free activities including children-friendly activities like the Irish Fairy Trails and O’Carrolls Cove. This trip also has 73 cost-effective restaurants.

The five remaining road trips were: Copper Coast in Waterford, Inishowen 100 in Donegal, Slea Head Drive in Kerry, Ring of Hook Peninsula in Wexford and Cooley Peninsula Scenic Drive in Louth.

Inishowen 100 had the cheapest petrol at an average price of 188.2c while the Ring of Hook Peninsula had the cheapest diesel at 194.1c. Priest’s Leap and Caha Mountain Pass Scenic Loop Drive had the most expensive petrol and diesel at 203.6c and 202.8c.

Inishowen 100 also had the second highest number of Instagram posts at 57,400.
