The Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry conducted a field survey on the user-friendliness of railway services at railway stations in the Tokyo metropolitan area on Tuesday, exactly two years before the opening of the 2020 Olympic Games, as many visitors from overseas will use the stations.
Nine foreigners, including international students, participated in the study by actually using train services, including asking station staff in a foreign language how to board trains and purchasing train tickets at ticket vending machines at Tokyo Station and other stations. A 30-year-old-man from South Korea said, "There is little information about accidents or delays in foreign languages, so I hope that's improved."
The government has set a goal of bringing the number of inbound visitors to 40 million in 2020 from about 28.69 million in 2017. The problem areas revealed by the study will be shared with railway companies and used to make improvements.
