Studs and duds from Colts’ 31-24 loss to Raiders

The Indianapolis Colts (2-2) were upset by the Oakland Raiders (2-2) on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium—dropping the Week 4 matchup, 31-24.

It was a sloppy game on both sides of the ball for the Colts and while a late comeback was almost in the cards, they fell short at home in a game they were heavily favored.

Here’s a look at the studs and duds from:

STUD: S Khari Willis

The rookie safety filled in for the injured Malik Hooker, who will miss a few weeks with a torn meniscus. It was a very encouraging outing for the fourth-round pick out of Michigan State. He made some big tackles on a day where the entire defense struggled. He had one particular play that was impressive when he came downhill on a screen for a tackle for loss. Willis is beginning to mold into a starting role.

DUD: TE Eric Ebron

The Colts offense was plagued by drops throughout the entire game, and the main culprit was the tight end in Ebron. Though he came into the game with a strong matchup, Ebron had at least three drops during the first half—a few of which were wide open passes. Ebron wasn’t the only one suffering from drops, but he was brutal when it came to securing catches. He did salvage his day with a 48-yard touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter.

STUD: TE Jack Doyle

On the other side of the formation was Doyle, who made an impact in both phases of his game. He was a solid run blocker for the most part. No surprise there. But he also caught a touchdown pass from Jacoby Brissett in the first quarter to get the Colts on the board after they fell quickly down two touchdowns to the Raiders. He finished with four receptions for 22 yards and one touchdown.

DUD: CB Quincy Wilson

The third-year cornerback didn’t have te best outing on Sunday. The Florida product was on the wrong end of a touchdown reception for the Raiders—their second of the first half. Though it wasn’t terrible coverage, Wilson couldn’t get his head around in time to make a play on the ball. It then resulted in a 19-yard touchdown for Tyrell Williams, who made a nice adjustment while Wilson’s head was fixated on him and not the ball.

STUD: WR Zach Pascal

The Colts didn’t get much help from the wide receivers with T.Y. Hilton missing the game due to a quad injury. Chester Rogers wound up catching a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter but if there was a wide receiver that has been steady, it has been Pascal. That continued on Sunday against the Raiders. He finished catching four of seven targets for 72 yards. Even when Hilton returns, Pascal has emerged as the Colts’ WR2.

DUD: Front Seven

The Colts have a serious problem when it comes to the front seven. They have been atrocious trying to stop opposing rushing attacks, and this is the second week in a row that the defensive line has failed to record a sack. There was almost no pressure going after Derek Carr, and the run defense continues to be abysmal. Losing a game like this at home against the Raiders is never good—but its even worse when considering how they got beat in the trenches.
