Students told to stay at home as headteacher forced to close part of school due to covid

A headteacher was forced to partially close a school to some students after issues with staffing caused by coronavirus.

The entire year 9 group at Weatherhead High School, in Wallasey, have been asked to remain at home from Monday, November 23 until Friday, Novemeber 27.

They will be allowed to return to classes at the school on Monday, November 30.

Miss Whelan made the announcement in a letter home to parents and said that "as a result of self-isolation and other covid related absences " the school could no longer safely stay open to all students.

She said that the teams providing pastoral care, duties, safeguarding support and teaching staff had been the worst affected.

In the letter, she added: "In the first instance, I have decided at this time, to ask all students in Year 9 to remain at home from Monday 23 November to Friday 27 November.

"Students in Year 9 will return to school on Monday 30 November."

Parents and carers of those affected have been asked to encourage their children to continue studying at home and to keep their routine.

She said: "Students will be able to access all of their lesson content and resources via Google Classroom.

"Work will be set for each lesson in advance and students should follow their normal daily timetable as much as possible.

"Students may struggle with being isolated from their friends over the next week and we would encourage students to access support services, details of which can be found on our school website under ‘Safety & Wellbeing’.

"This is a challenging and stressful time for us all, and please be assured this is not a decision I have taken lightly.

"I will continue to monitor the situation daily, therefore please continue to check your emails for any updates or changes to these arrangements.

"Thank you for your continued support."
