Students told to self-isolate after positive coronavirus case at Gosforth Academy

A number of Year 11 pupils have been sent home from a Newcastle school after a positive coronavirus case was identified.

Gosforth Academy confirmed at least one person had contracted the virus and is self-isolating for 10 days.

A group of pupils in Year 11 who have been in close contact with the case have also been told to stay at home until March 21.

In a letter addressed to parents and carers, headteacher Preit Chahal said: "We have been advised that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the school.

"We have identified that your child has been in close contact with the affected case.

"In line with the national guidance we recommend that your child now stays at home and self isolates.

You can keep up-to-date with the latest school cases and closures across the region here.

"Following updated advice from Public Health England, your child's date to finish isolating is March 21, 2021."

The school will remain open and is working alongside Public Health England.

ChronicleLive contacted Gosforth Academy for a comment.

Gosforth Academy is the latest in a growing number of North East schools to be hit by the virus after reopening earlier this week.

Shotton Hall Primary School in Peterlee, Academy 360 in Sunderland, Seaham High School and Wingate Primary School have all confirmed cases since all children were welcomed back to the classroom.

It comes after England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Jenny Harries said a "larger number of children" could be out of class in the coming weeks as secondary school students are being asked to take Covid-19 tests on site as they return to school.

But Dr Harries played down suggestions that schools may be forced to close again if new Covid-19 cases emerge, adding that we can be “very optimistic” going forward.
