Students suspended after forcing dog to drink beer at keg party

A fraternity has been suspended after students were caught on camera forcing a puppy to drink beer at a keg party.

The five-second clip, shared on Snapchat and Twitter, captures one college student holding a small dog on in the air while another one sprays the beer into the dog's mouth.

The dog struggled to break free as it was being held upside down during the shocking incident in New York.

Other college students did not seem to stop the pair but cheered while watching it from behind.

Local media reported that the incident happened at an off-campus party hosted by the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity at Hofstra University in New York on May 11.

The dog - a 10-month-old King Charles Cavalier - is owned by one the men shown in the video, according to CBS New York.

Neighbour Violet Avery, who lives a few doors down from the fraternity chapter, watched the video and said: "That's disgusting. A dog can't say no.

"They are young people, they want to have fun but there's a sense of decency in the neighbourhood."

Officials at the university deemed the behaviour as 'unacceptable and in violation of the University's Code of Community Standards'.

The chapter at Hofstra University has now been put on 'cease and desist' by the international fraternity due to suspected violations of health and safety policies.

Jon Pierce, a spokesman for the Alpha Epsilon Pi International said in a statement: "We hope that we are able to use this as a teaching moment to help build better young men who are committed to our policies and our mission of developing the future leaders of the world’s Jewish communities."

The Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has also launched an investigation into the suspected animal cruelty and took the dog into its care

Gary Rogers, Board President of the SPCA at the Nassau county, said: "It's wrong on every level. It's just not rational thinking."

The puppy is expected to return to its owner despite the incident, it is reported.
