Students sent home after confirmed coronavirus case at Bury high school

Students have been sent home following a positive coronavirus case at a Bury high school.

The headteacher of Philips High School in Higher Lane, Whitefield, wrote to parents today (September 16).

All those who have been in close contact with the person have been told to 'stay at home and self-isolate until 14 days after their last contact'.

It isn't yet known if it's a staff member or a pupil.

It is understood around 40 students have been sent home.

The letter, posted on the school website, reads: "We have been advised that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the school.

"We have carried out a full risk assessment and identified all those who have been in close contact with the affected case and have recommended that they stay at home and self-isolate until 14 days after their last contact.

"Your child has not been identified as a close contact and therefore does not need to make any change to their usual routine, including school attendance."

Two earlier Covid cases were confirmed at the school - on September 10, the second on September 14.

No pupils were sent home on those occasions.

Headteacher Tina Owen said in both cases: "We have been advised by Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the school.

"As you might expect, I am not able to release any further details of the person in respect to their privacy but pupils have NOT been affected.

"Please do not worry - we are going above and beyond government guidelines regarding the safety of our pupils and staff in school but in the interest of transparency I am advising you of this case.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England. This letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide advice on how to support your child.

"Please be reassured that for most people, coronavirus will be a mild illness."

Philips High School has been contacted for further comment.
