Students moved to temporary accommodation after ninth floor flat fire

Students were evacuated from a high rise building in Liverpool city centre after a fire broke out.

The emergency services  were called out to the Unite Students building at Grand Central at around 7.27pm last night.

Five engines and a ladder platform were sent out to the scene off Skelhorne Street.

Students were evacuated from the building as crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze on the ninth floor of the block.

A spokesperson for Unite Students, the company who operate the accommodation issued a statement after the fire and confirmed that a number of students will be given temporary rooms.

The statement said: “This evening our teams dealt with a fire at our Grand Central property in Liverpool.

“Students were quickly evacuated from the affected block and the fire was swiftly contained and extinguished.

“No one was hurt in the incident and the fire and rescue service have allowed students to return to the building.

“A small number of students will move rooms for the night while repairs are made.”

Today a spokesman for the fire service confirmed to the ECHO they left the scene at around 9.40pm last night. There were no reports of any injuries.
