Students in Finglas, north Dublin school hold their first ever politics and society exhibition

Students in a north Dublin school put their political prowess to the test and held its first ever politics and society exhibition.

The sixth year pupils from Beneavin De la Salle College in Finglas welcomed several general election candidates to the building to see their work.

Among them were local councillors Mary Callaghan of the Social Democrats and Caroline Conroy of the Green party joined with local TD Noel Rock of Fine Gael.

Some of the subjects presented included what areas of concern they discovered face Travellers and Refugees in Ireland on a daily basis.

Spirasi's Robert King told the students that their findings was a major theme of his organisation's work and said the same issues affect large swathes of the Irish Traveller Community, leading to poorer life outcomes when it came to areas like health and education.

And climate change was among the hot topics on the agenda, with students giving great examples of young climate activists who are busy taking on the major stumbling blocks to a more sustainable future throughout the world.

There was a particularly stark message to the Government TD Noel Rock to cease immediately burning Colombian coal in the ESB owned power station in Moneypoint, Co Clare.

Students explained how the extraction of this coal has been responsible for many human rights violations and assassinations in the northern region of Colombia where it comes from in addition to the huge environmental cost.
