Students have classes suspended due to 'serious and immediate' safety concerns

Nearly 50 students at City College Nottingham have had their lessons suspended because of 'serious and immediate concerns'.

The nature of the concerns has not been made clear, but it affects 44 construction students who were using workshops at another college site.

The construction course is provided by Nottingham College but classes were being held at the City College Nottingham site in Carlton Road, St Ann's. The two are separate educational providers.

Courses were provided to students in bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating, plastering, plumbing and electrical installation.

One 50-year-old mature student says he is now signing on after being told his construction course was suspended due to the concerns over safety.

Gary Mead, 50, of Chilwell, said he was going to the job centre to sign on after he was told his course was suspended.

He was training to be a plumber and had been on the course for a year, after being made redundant.

He was hoping to secure a plumber job from the course but as that has been thrown into doubt he is signing on.

"I was working in fixing machinery for 24 years and I was made redundant," he said.

"We were given no warning other than it's been suspended immediately. I was on the course all last year and was six or seven weeks into this year.

"I was going to job interviews telling people I'm training and had something to aim for. I wanted that change in career so I could work for myself potentially.

"But now I'm worried I'll be left with nothing to show for it. I'm going to the Job Centre right now."

A spokesman for Nottingham College said they "will do everything we can to ensure that students can still achieve their qualification."

They added: “Following a visit to City College from our construction team we have serious and immediate concerns about the safety of students using construction workshops.

"The safety of our students is the most important thing. So we have had to make the difficult decision to suspend construction students’ timetabled classes and sessions at the City College campus from Wednesday, November 20.

“It is a difficult decision to disrupt students’ studies but we feel this is the only way we can keep them safe.

"We are looking at what the best options are for students to continue with their courses and we have asked students to meet with our construction teams at City College on Friday and Monday (November 22 and November 25) to talk about their future options.

"We apologise to students, their parents and carers for any inconvenience caused.”

City College Nottingham has been contacted for comment, but no-one was available.
