Students donate goggles used in lessons to aid shortage of protection equipment for medical staff

Students at two Weston-super-Mare schools have donated goggles used during lessons to health providers – as the NHS struggles to provide personal protection equipment (PPE).

Pupils from Priory School Academy and Worle Community School delivered hundreds of pairs of the goggles to Weston Hospital and local care homes.

The goggles are normally worn by students during their science lessons, but will now be used by medical staff and carers.

The move comes at the same time as the NHS and local care homes are struggling to find PPE for their staff and to protect patients to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Last week North Somerset Council issued a public appeal to business and individuals across the district to donate any PPE they had at home to support local care services.

The King Alfred School Academy in Highbridge also donated hundreds of pairs of goggles to a local hospital.

All three schools are part of The Priory Learning Trust.

Executive Principal Neville Coles said: “We were very pleased to assist the NHS in these challenging times.”

The council said it had received a good response to its public appeal so far.

A council spokesman said: “The council has already received over 35 responses to the plea for PPE.

“Please keep it coming. Items donated include hand sanitiser, nitrile gloves and handmade masks and aprons.”
