Students could get their university tuition fees refunded

Some students could be entitled to have their university tuition fees refunded, or reduced, according to a legal expert.

English universities can charge up to £9,250 a year for an undergraduate degree with universities in Wales charging up to £9,000 a year.

But students have found the experience in 2020 very different from what they would have expected, thanks to coronavirus restrictions.

Many universities are now offering online instead of face to face tuition, among other changes.

Consumer champion and legal expert Dean Dunham, writing in The Sunday Mirror, said: "To assess your rights to a refund, you must carry out a comparison of: i) the tuition, and therefore the service you would have received in normal times, as opposed to ii) the tuition and service you are receiving now."

He added: "To be entitled to any refund, you have to be able to conclude that the quality and quantity of the teaching is below that which you originally expected and signed up for."

Mr Dunham said refunds, if you are entitled, would be enforced through the Consumer Rights Act 2015 - which states that consumers should receive the goods and services they were promised. Section 56 provides the right to a reduction in fees.
