Students clash with police at Gauhati University over ‘unjust’ evaluation

GUWAHATI: The police scuffled with protesting students on the Gauhati University (GU) campus on Tuesday as hundreds of students thronged the varsity premises here, accusing the GU authority of unjust evaluation of undergraduate (UG) final-year students in their semester-end examination.

A large number of final-year UG students failed in their fifth exam, results of which were declared a few days ago. “It was shocking that many students got zero in different papers. Many students failed in four papers,” claimed one of the protesters.

Police were deployed at the university to stop any untoward incident and the protesters were taken away for detention when the agitation became intense with growing support from the students. They were, however, released later.

The Post Graduate Students’ Union members, who went to control the situation, also came into confrontation with the police. “We went to resist the police when they started detaining the UG college students. Police picked us as well. After university students came out in our support, police dropped the plan to detain us and left the campus,” said PGSU vice-president, Nabadip Borgohain.
