Students 'bought all the flowers in Woolton' after 'unbearable' loss of teacher

Staff and students from St Julie's Catholic High School have paid tribute to a beloved colleague who died just five days after being diagnosed with cancer.

Danielle Duffy, from Netherley, died at Woolton Marie Curie Hospice last Tuesday (October 12) aged just 38.

The mum-of-two, who was head of social sciences at St Julie's Catholic High School has been remembered by staff and students at the school.

The school's headteacher has said students 'bought probably all the flowers in Woolton' to pay tribute.

After feeling unwell in August, Danielle underwent tests before being diagnosed with 'cancer of unknown origin' on October 7 at Whiston Hospital.

Due to start chemotherapy the following Monday, her devastated 'close-knit' family said neither they or Danielle expected her death to follow only five days later.

Mum to Isabella, three, and Daniel, seven, she had worked at St Julie's for a decade as a business teacher and head of department.

Headteacher Tim Alderman described the loss as "unbearable".

He told The ECHO : "I appointed Danielle to the position of Curriculum Leader for Social Sciences, including ICT, which was a large and demanding role.

"Danielle was a strong presence, intelligent, articulate and very caring.

"Danielle was well respected across the city and was well known in her curriculum subject circles.

"She organised citywide teacher training days, led network meetings and contributed to moderation meetings alongside colleagues in many other schools.

"She was the sort of person that people listened to because she knew her stuff and cared passionately that all students should get the very best education, regardless of who they are or where they came from.

"This tragic loss of such a vibrant, young woman and mother has been almost unbearable.

"However, staff have been inspired by the reaction of the students she taught, especially the Sixth Form students who, after the initial shock, went out and bought probably all the flowers in Woolton to bring back to our Chapel, to display them in her memory and in her honour."

"She has inspired the next generation of confident young women in Liverpool."

Colleague Beth Gore said: "Danielle's strength and determination to succeed was admirable.

"She was always happy and willing to give her time to support colleagues and students."

A Just Giving fundraising page set up by Danielle's family in her name has so far raised over £2,000 from 132 supporters.

The funds raised will go towards Marie Curie in Woolton where Danielle stayed.

Many ex-students of Ms Duffy have left comments on the fundraising page, describing her as "an inspiration" and revealing how she helped shape their studies and achieve their dreams.

One person said: "If it wasn’t for [Danielle] I wouldn’t have studied business at uni and then again at masters level.

"She had a lot of faith in me during a difficult time where others didn’t and it really meant a lot to me."

Grace Howell said: "You were more than just a teacher, a true inspiration to us all.

"You’ve given us the strength to carry on, we will make you proud.

"Thank for you everything, we were lucky to have known you."

Jen Lloyd said: "You were the reason I got inspired in business and wanted to carry on with it and I can't thank you enough for that.
