Students 'banged down door' after neighbour noise complaint

Liverpool residents said they had their front door 'aggressively banged down' by students complaining that they had been evicted over noise complaints.

A couple living in Langton Road in the Picton area of Wavertree said the confrontation came after they made complaints about constant late night noise and anti-social behaviour from students living in their street.

The couple, who have asked not to be named, said they have lived in the area for around four years and that there are often problems emanating from student shared houses.

But like other residents in the south Liverpool, they said problems have come to a head in recent weeks as the end of university terms has met the end of lockdown.

One resident said: "We haven't been able to have one decent night's sleep in the past three weeks.

"There is music blaring every night when students come back from the pubs around midnight, we work in the morning so it is really difficult.

"There were also parties happening during lockdown which obviously shouldn't have been."

With ongoing problems in student areas, local residents have been encouraged to report incidents of antisocial behaviour - and the residents of Langton Road have been doing so.

But this appeared to provoke an aggressive confrontation with some of the neighbouring students.

One of the residents explained: "We had our front door aggressively banged down by one of the students from the property that was making all the noise in the early hours.

"When I answered, the girl said 'we've just had another noise complaint now we're going to get evicted and lose our degrees.' I am gobsmacked, this just shows the complete lack of respect the students have for this area and the residents.

"They feel entitled to make noise and do whatever they like, the residents are just expected to put up with it and when they don't they are the ones in the wrong?"

Her partner said the local students see the area as theirs.

He added: "They shouted 'this is a student area, if you don't like it then move.' at us.

"But it isn't a student area, there are families with children in this street, older people too."

He added: "We really need to stop this attitude of 'this is a student area', we need to break this cycle."

There have been growing concerns about antisocial behaviour from students in the Wavertree area and in other parts of south Liverpool.

Liverpool Wavertree MP Paula Barker has spoken out about the problems and has been meeting with local police.

Ms Barker said: "I recently held a meeting in my constituency office with Police Inspector David Uren.

"I was pleased to hear confirmation that the police have now had two weeks of greater active enforcement.

"This, of course, is a work in progress but includes patrolling locations identified as problematic to residents as well as directly challenging noisy and loud parties.

"Alongside this, council departments have assured me that legislation will be used to tackle noise breaches.

"This also follows the story covered by the Echo recently regarding Council officers knocking on student doors in areas where we have persistent problems."

She added: "I am pleased that, finally, these matters are being taken seriously.

"The academic term is at an end and in the coming week, many students will be heading home for the Summer. Whilst stuff is happening to hopefully improve the situation for residents, we will only know whether such measures have truly been successful come the start of the new term in the Autumn. As a Member of Parliament, I have no powers in this area but will continue to do all I can in speaking up for my constituents and their communities."
