Students at Wallsend school told to work from home for third week running

Pupils at a North Tyneside school have been asked to work from home for the third week running due to the impact of the pandemic.

For the past two weeks, some year groups at Churchill Community College, in Wallsend, were asked to continue their learning at home and a rota was put in place informing parents which pupils were to attend school on what days.

The action was taken because a number of staff members as well as students were having to self-isolate due to being close contacts of confirmed coronavirus cases.

Now the school has announced the remote working will have to continue this week.

A letter sent to parents last week said: "Once again, the number of staff and students needing to self-isolate has unfortunately continued to rise in our community and more students are finding themselves working at home.

"We have also had to make difficult decisions about college being closed to some year groups on certain days to ensure everyone’s health and safety and unfortunately this will again need to continue next week.

"We know this is a difficult situation for parents too, therefore we wanted to remind you about the routine we have for students whilst they are learning at home."

According to this week's rota, Years 7 and 8 are to stay at home on Monday and Tuesday, while Years 9 and 10 were asked to attend school as usual.

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Years 9 and 10 were told to work from home, while Years 7 and 8 are to go to school.

However, Years 11, 12 and 13 are to continue attending school every day.

Churchill Community College is among scores of schools across the North East that have been affected by coronavirus since the start of the new academic year in September.

A number of schools have had to close and carry out deep cleans, while others have continued operating after asking affected year groups or bubbles to isolate.
