Students' anger at General Election result after 'registration error' prevented them from being able to vote

Students in Cardiff have expressed their anger at not being able to vote in Thursday's General Election due to a "registration issue".

Many say they registered before the November 26 deadline b ut were only told this week their details were incorrect and they had lost their vote .

Cardiff council said around 1,000 people were contacted and had their details updated but around 200 people applications were invalid.

Brandon Jeffs, 20, a drama and theatre student at the University of South Wales, said he broke down while watching the election results last night.

He said: "I was in tears watching it last night because I didn't have a say, I wasn't able to vote. I saw the result and cried for hours because I couldn't do anything about it.

"It was a big margin and my vote probably wouldn't have helped but the fact I couldn't do anything about it was disgusting. A number of my flat mates were also emotional because we felt hopeful.

"I don't want a Boris Johnson led government, they go against everything I am, a gay man. I'm devastated."

The 20-year-old from Pontypridd , said a number of students who live at the Liberty Bridge student accommodation were affected by the registration error.

He said his flat mate decided to go back to Kent to vote and meant she had to miss lectures for a number of days.

Brandon said: "When we registered we entered our postcode and it gives you a selection box, but it doesn't allow you to enter your flat number. The system is broken and is very confusing and shouldn't be that way.

"We tried to contact the electoral commission but they told us it was too late or that they couldn't do anything now. It was incredibly frustrating knowing my democratic vote had been taken away from me.

"There is a clear flaw in the system and it needs to be fixed."

On Wednesday, the council it is was not up to the Electoral Registration Officer to chase up invalid applications.

Brandon said one of the things that attracted him to vote for Labour was the promise they made to wipe away student debt.

He added: "I can see first hand how student debt is affecting us. One of my friends had £8 left till the end of the month,  we can't even afford food after paying our bills.

"All this has just made me feel demotivated at the moment with everything, especially at university."

Cardiff council said they have raised concerns with the Electoral Commission, as anyone who registers will receive a confirmation email, regardless of whether the information supplied is correct or not.

A spokeswoman for the Electoral Commission, said: "We are aware that Cardiff Council is currently dealing with enquiries from a number of students about their electoral registration status ahead of the UK general election.

"We understand that the local electoral registration team has tried to contact as many affected people as possible to clarify their details so that they could be correctly reflected on the electoral register for the poll. If anyone has any questions about their registration status, they should contact the local authority directly."

A spokesman for Cardiff council, added: "It is the responsibility of the elector to validly register and there is no obligation on the Electoral Registration Officer to chase up invalid applications."
