Dozens of students and environmental activists took part in a campaign to clean a beach south of the Lebanese capital Beirut.
The volunteers sought to clean the Saint Simon and Saint Michel beaches, in the Ouzai area, amid growing fears of pollution of the Lebanese waters given the dumping of waste and sewage in the sea.
The problem was also compounded with the establishment of garbage dumps near the shores.
The clean up campaign was organized by the Ghobeiri municipality in cooperation with activists, students, schools and environment organizations to raise awareness over the environment problems suffered by the Lebanese coast.
The participants cleaned up the shore and recycled waste.
The Ouzai region not only has to contend with its impoverished population, but it must deal with environment problems caused by garbage.
Secretary-General of the National Council for Scientific Research Mouin Hamze unveiled a recent study of the sea that found that 16 out of 25 locations are suitable for swimming.
