Student with coronavirus found dead in room while quarantining in university halls

A 20-year-old university student who was quarantining after a positive coronavirus test has been found dead in her dorm room.

Bethany Nesbitt was found in university halls at Grace College in Indiana, USA.

A medical report revealed that Covid-19 "played a role" in her death, as her official cause was listed as a pulmonary embolism - a blocked blood vessel in your lungs.

Coroner Tony Ciriello said, according to the school: “After a complete investigation and autopsy, the cause of death has been ruled natural due to a pulmonary embolus that had not been previously detected.

“While Covid did play a role in contributing to the death, it was not caused by Covid.”

The psychology student from Michigan, who had asthma, began experiencing symptoms 10 days earlier and was rushed to hospital when her oxygen levels dropped.

But the doctor said Miss Nesbitt appeared to be recovering, so she returned to her room to quarantine.

She was found on Friday, October 30.

Her family is now urging others to remain cautious as Covid-19 cases continue to rise in the UK and the US.

A family statement, in the Charlotte Observer, said: "Please don’t assume that young people will not be impacted by this virus.

“Bethany was careful.

"She wore her mask. She socially distanced.

"We urge you to follow health officials’ protocols and precautions.

"We had already cancelled our family holiday plans before Bethany got sick.

"The risks of gathering in large groups aren’t worth it this year."

They added: “She was a selfless and loving friend, a source of constant encouragement to all those around her."
